Mixotrophy upgrades food quality for marine calanoid copepods

چکیده
Inorganic nutrient limitation affects the stoichiometry and nutritional quality of marine phytoplankton. Mixoplankton, able to photosynthesize feed simultaneously in one cell, can compensate shortage nutrients by phagotrophy, theoretically upgrading their for predators: zooplankton. Yet, additional value that phagotrophy mixoplankton may provide support zooplankton growth recruitment has been poorly explored. Therefore, we investigated feeding reproductive performances copepods Paracartia grani Centropages typicus on mono-diets dinoflagellate Karlodinium veneficum grown as strict autotroph mixotroph, both under N P depletion, nutrient-balanced conditions (f/2 medium; only autotroph). Feeding reproduction outputs were generally higher P. than C. typicus. Both copepod species ingested mixotrophic K. at similar rates autotrophic ones either nutrient-limited scenario. However, egg production increased when mixotrophs, N- P-limited diets, limitation. In general, influenced physiology more depletion. Our results show upgrades mixotrophs prey compared ones. These findings are among first reported cases ingestion laboratory actively mixoplankton, they highlight importance considering trophic mode protist response various zooplanktonic predators attempting understand functioning planktonic food webs.

Mixotrophy stirs up our understanding of marine food webs.
Mixotrophy among planktonic eukaryotic organisms is broadly defined as the combined use of photosynthetic and heterotrophic nutrition within a single organism. The conventional view of species as either phototrophic (capable of producing energy and carbon for growth using only inorganic compounds and light) or heterotrophic (wholly dependent on preformed organic material for nutrition) is a pre...
متن کاملMixotrophy in the Marine Plankton.
Mixotrophs are important components of the bacterioplankton, phytoplankton, microzooplankton, and (sometimes) zooplankton in coastal and oceanic waters. Bacterivory among the phytoplankton may be important for alleviating inorganic nutrient stress and may increase primary production in oligotrophic waters. Mixotrophic phytoflagellates and dinoflagellates are often dominant components of the pla...

The seasonal cycles of reproduction of the dominant copepods Acartia clausi, Temora longicornis, Centropages hamatus, C. typicus and Pseudocalanus spp. were studied at Helgoland Roads, southern North Sea. Egg production rate, clutch size, number of spawning females and prosome length were compared with temperature and phytoplankton concentration. Female A. clausi, T. longicornis and Pseudocalan...
متن کاملTemperature cycles affect colonization potential of calanoid copepods.
Marine calanoid copepods colonize new habitats, and some become invasive. Their fitness, measured by intrinsic growth rate and net reproductive rate, is partially driven by biochemical processes. Thus, it is a function of ambient temperature. Biochemical processes may not be approximated well by yearly mean temperature alone when temperature cycles yearly, largely. Higher order moments may also...
متن کاملChemoreceptors and feeding in calanoid copepods (Arthropoda: Crustacea).
Ultrastructural studies of the mouthparts of the calanoid copepod Diaptomus pallidus have revealed the presence of numerous chemoreceptors, and the apparent absence of mechanoreceptors. The setae contain no muscles, and the setules are noncellular extensions of their chitin wall. This allows a new insight into the selective feeding of zooplankters.
